the relentless dividing up of the citizenry into ever more specific demographic groups.
Each of those groups is taught by the politicians and special interest leaders that they've been cheated and exploited, and need to be on constant lookout to ensure they aren't aggrieved. Secondly, the pols and special interest leaders let them know that they can be made whole through the force of government, if they vote correctly.
These concerns over things 20 years ago, and things that should be taken with a grain of salt quite frankly, enrage the loyal and well trained foot soliders of these groups and the need for payback and punishment is almost insatiable.
It also reminds potential other offenders what lays in store for them should they not toe the mark correctly.
