are underreported each year, because a lot of people dont get tested, so they try and correct that by making an estimate. The 95% confidence interval is somewhere between 40000 and 80000, meaning there's a 95% chance statistically that the real number is in that range. Depending on what numbers they use and what assumptions they make, that number can be quite elevated.

They will likely go back and do the same thing with COVID after the season is over, because those numbers are also underreported.
