firmly believe the best way to increase an interest is to dump the playoff system and return to the old bowl system of the 80's with one exception.
After the bowls are over, play one extra game between the two highest ranked teams after the bowls.
In the big picture, this was all that ever needed to be done.
People argued about Colorado and GaTech, but nobody cared about Miami.
People argued about Miami and Washington, but nobody cared about Penn St.
Same with Nebraska and Michigan, nobody cared about Floirda St.
What this does is make more bowl games matter and should help some of their attendance issues. National Champions used to come from the Cotton and even Holiday Bowl and not just the top 3-4 games. Right now, 95% o the focus is on the 4 teams in the playoff and the rest really doesn't matter anymore. But if we were to go back, then you have a larger focus on 5-6 games and thus 10+ teams.
Now, I am in no way saying this will happen and that is because it won't make more money. I'm just saying that ultimately, it would be more interesting and might actually increase fan interest through the bowl season.
