by just looking at charts and extracting info based on diagnosis codes and yes/no inquiries if they received the med. This is a common type of study done there b/c they have a lot of data (all VA patients) in one chart system. It's "lazy", but it's still worth doing b/c it can show results soon.

They pointed out the weaknesses to that type of study in their discussion; they also pointed out that the HQN patients were sicker (which would make sense, doctors would choose to pull out a promising but unproven treatment once the patient starts to deteriorate and all conservative strategies are exhausted). Also, remember that it hasn't gone through peer review yet, so there might be more caveats given in the conclusion.

That didn't stop the media and folks like MBS from attempting to spike the football about it. Even the media was called out by the VA for misinterpreting the results.

Unfortunately, the french studies are just as bad.
