able to differentiate Russia's desire to sow discord generally versus actually supporting Donald Trump?

And to what extent did this Russian "aim", regardless of underlying intent, have any effect?

nobody really disputes whether or not Russia interferes in some manner. The key was whether or not team Trump colluded with them in their efforts and the answer to that is a resounding "no".
