Trump said it shows promise. It does. There are some studies that show it being effective, and some not so effective (like the VA study). Until the randomized control studies are done, we just don't know. Trump, and all his advisors, have been crystal clear about this the entire time.
But this is drug we know everything about. We know the side effects. We know who should take and who shouldn't. We know when people should stop taking it if they have certain side effects. Trump has been clear about this the entire time.
In a pandemic, when there is no cure and no hope for one, is it really bad to give this a try? As Trump has said, there really isn't any risk in trying it for those individuals that can take it (see previous paragraph). No one is saying it should blindly be given to every patient, but I trust the doctors to make the right decision about who should and shouldn't take it. I don't think that should be left up to some bureaucrat to say it can't be given just because Trump said you should consider it. That is wrong and dangerous.
And yes, I am aware of the VA study. It has no more scientific validity that the other studies that have shown it to have promise. But it is funny to me the minions have latched on to this one saying it is gospel while saying out of their other mouth that the other studies aren't valid because they are no randomized control studies. It makes your argument incredibly weak, and reeks of political motives.
