There are issues with the chloroquine derivatives. That's why hospitals that are using it (which is quite unusual, since they usually require better evidence before allowing its use - probably b/c it's so cheap compared to other novel treat) are taking safety precautions before anyone gets HQN. Mandatory EKG prior to starting, must be on telemetry during treatment, and discontinuation if there's any increase in QTc > 500 msec.
I have no idea what they were doing in Brazil, but the fact that they were using chloroquine (a less potent antiviral [allegedly] with the same heart risks) at higher doses probably is what doomed that study.
