Regarding your last paragraph, for those who lived through the Devine era, 1998 certainly felt like a return to glory for Mizzou football at the time.
Here's what the '98 team accomplished:
2nd consecutive winning record
2nd consecutive conference winning record
2nd consecutive bowl game
2nd consecutive Top 25 final rankings by both AP & UP
Those things collectively had not been accomplished since Devine in '68-'69.
Pinkel took us to the next level during his tenure, but in the fall of 1998, after 20 years in the wilderness, it definitely had a 'return to glory' feeling. Unfortunately it took 10 more years before a team accomplished all those things again.
