what I've seen and what I've heard

What I've heard and what I've seen personally are two different things. What I've heard, from multiple sources, is that he is kind of an ass.

Which perhaps is understandable - not commendable, but understandable, if your life is very public from a very early age.

What I've seen, is a different story. I was at a driving range at a golf course, warming up, there were maybe 2-3 other guys there. Whatever. I remember one of them saying to the other, "have you heard from George yet?", right as the other's cell phone rings. After a brief conversation, the guy says, "yeah, he's in the parking lot."

2-3 minutes later, this guy comes walking down the hill, stops and talks to a few people who seem happy to see him at the nearby pool, and then comes over to the driving range. He seemed like an absolute gentleman to the 2-3 other guys there. George freaking Brett. Dude is in the foursome in front of us all day long.

So...maybe he's a horse's ass to the general public and very kind and fun to the people he knows.
