Mizzou is the quientesential midwestern public university. It’s official mission is to provide a good (note the use of the word good, not great) to Missouri high school grads. Dropping football would create a major firestorm among not only what I’ll loosely call the Mizzou family, but also in the wider world east of St.Louis and west of KC, not to mention the lamentations, hand wringing and end of life as we know it among what I will loosely call the Mizzou family.
The fire storm, end of life as we know it, etc would/will be worth it only if terminating the program as one step in a major transformation of Mizzou, I.e. a make to Mizzou one of the top twenty-five public research and education universities in America. That’s not going to happen, so no, don’t end the football program, let it struggle along as is.
