It's the rule almost everywhere but the south where major league sports came very late in the game. There were no MLB or NFL franchises in the south until the mid/late 60s so college football had no competition in building a tradition. Everywhere else in he country, pro sports dominate over college sports. College sports in Missouri are the realm of alumni, the rural population and basketball fans that do not have pro teams to follow. I admit to not really following college football that much: I think it's vastly inferior to professional football and it's far too dominated by a relative few teams to make it interesting.
