I have a fighting chance that some bright soul might find a cure.

I'm willing to be inconvenienced somewhat to help someone else avoid that fate.

I don't disagree with the concerns that the "cure" may be worse than the "condition". I'm not even sure how you begin to do a cost-benefit analysis on that.
