K.J. Walton will not participate in Ball State basketball’s senior night festivities Tuesday when it plays Central Michigan at Worthen Arena.

BSU assistant director for athletic communications Tyson Mathews told The Star Press the program is pursuing a medical hardship waiver for the redshirt senior guard, and that Walton is scheduled to have surgery Friday to mend the ankle injury that’s limited his availability this season. Walton, who suffered the injury during a Cardinals’ loss in November 2019 against Northern Kentucky, has only appeared in 10 games total and none since BSU’s win Jan. 7 against Buffalo.

Neither Walton nor BSU coach James Whitford will be available to speak on the subject until the matter is resolved, according to Mathews. Mathews also said Ball State is working with the NCAA and Mid-American Conference to get Walton the extra year of eligibility, and that BSU’s reasoning stems from both the year Walton sat out as a transfer from Missouri and the injury he’s dealing with.

Walton is averaging 7.8 points and five rebounds per game across his 10 appearances, with five starts, this season after averaging 13 points and 4.3 rebounds in his 32 games, with 30 starts, last season. He won't be available the rest of this season.
