Amy and Pete both have promising futures in the party. Those futures are sullied if it is seen that out of nothing but ego they withheld those endorsements when it really mattered.

That's what happened. GEE did people talk on the phone. Of course they did. Both Amy and Pete did what was in their best interest. They had neither the money nor support to keep up the fight, so they get out at a time that helps the eventual nominee. That is smart politically, not some far-flung DNC-orchestrated plot.
