The Club, of which he is most certainly a member in good standing, looks out on a world too stupid to take care of itself and needs a healthy dose of their benevolence, tendered to the unwashed with governmental power and force, to make it through life.
They have no concept and most certainly zero interest in what an individual wants for himself, his family and most certainly could not care less about anyone's hopes and dreams for the future.
That individual liberty and freedom is constricted or simply taken in a legal framework that makes it all nice as they impose their vision of what a citizen needs (and will get to keep of his labor as an example) is just the way it goes.
