Dems completely controlled the House impeachment and could have went to court to fight for any witnesses they wanted. They didn't and also didn't allow witness for defense in their hearing, so saying they were really looking for the truth is laughable.
An investigation into Ukraine and into other possible corruption (which apparently are now being done) involves investigative branches that are meant to do that work. Witnesses in the Senate would have drawn out that farce for who knows how long and would have resulted in the same outcome. Dems wanted it for a political show but it basically would have shut down the government for and extended period for a political stunt.
We all saw the transcript of the call and know what happened. Six more months of people talking about it would have resulted in nothing but more wasted time and money, but out of desperation some were willing to give it a go. Luckily it was put to a swift death as was appropriate.
