Firing a person over legal retaliation is not a good business tactic, whether legal or not. It does not create a culture of wanting to keep a well run legit business.
Firing someone who presents alternative strategies of how the company should work is a bad idea as well. Although how someone presents those strategies should have a sense of decorum.
At the same point, why would someone want to work for someone who does not share the same values of vision you think is right. It would have been smarter for this guy to just resign the job (very publicly), although doing that in a politically charged atmosphere is quite different as you know the supporters of him will tear you apart (this is well documented on both sides).
