Taking your kids in an airplane is the same risks. If it crashes, you die.
A helicopter allowed Kobe to be more present in his kids life by getting around LA and avoiding traffic. If you had the money and lived in a place like LA where a helicopter makes sense from a time perspective, you'd likely do the exact same.
All that said, I have no idea what the decision was made the day they took off. Not sure if I would allow my kids in it in those conditions, but hindsight is 20/20.
