and like the area itself, it's full of unknowns, but the author draws conclusions anyway.
Why did the US & Europe care about who controlled the oil? Namely because our own reserves were untapped at the time and/or undiscovered. So it mattered to our economy who controlled those fields in the 50s, 60s, 70s, and onward. We needed it and we needed it at a certain price to make it all work.
And, if it's a region that's not tied to any government, but tribes, dialects and religions, then it's not exactly a recruiting poster for your calls for less government.
