It was just that Claire could no longer hide about being more moderate as she continued to support dem positions that have become increasingly more liberal. People could judge her on her actions and not her words, and that did not play well for her. It also helped that the GOP candidate did not make foolish comments.
As the dems move further and further left, this continues to hamper them. They retook the House in 2018 with smart, moderate candidates running on specific issues. They have now painted them as impeachment supporting extremists and they will pay in 2020 as swing district voters will judge them on their votes, not on their promises.
