In 2013 the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) estimated that, to limit global warming to 2 degrees Celsius, humans could only burn another 269 billion more tones of fossil fuels. The estimated reserves of fossil fuels (as of 2009) amount to 763 billion tones of proven and economically recoverable fossil fuel reserves. Humans currently burn about 10 billion tonnes of fossil fuels per year or 1.25 tones for each of the 7.5 billion people now on the planet. The U.S. is currently responsible for 1.5 billion tones of carbon burned per year (15%) or 4.64 tonnes per American. If the current rate of burning fossil fuels remains steady that means in 27 years, by 2044, we cannot burn anymore fossil fuels at all to avoid catastrophe.
