they were never going to get him removed though. So in that respect, it was just for show.

Nancy did not want this impeachment but it did serve two purposes. First, it shielded her from the new left which has taken control of the Dem party. Second, she and the party leaders came to the realization that none of the Dem candidates could beat Trump next year. This was their Hail Mary hoping to injure Trump enough that the Dem candidate could stand a chance next year.

I think both will blow up in her face. Even though impeachment was forced on her by her party it still has her name and her stamp of approval attached it. If the Dems are harmed by this, as it looks to be, Nancy will take a huge political hit. The second part seems to be failing also. Unless a miracle happens in the Senate Trump will have gained support from the independents that Nancy was hoping to pull away from him.
