Rev 1:1 The revelation from Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show his servants what must soon take place.

It seems most reasonable to me that the book was meant to proclaim the ultimate victory Christians would experience over their oppressors. It was a word of encouragement, written in symbols so that they would not be subject to persecution because of it by the Roman government.

The first verse of the book doesn't describe itself as a revelation of events two millennia forward. It was a revelation relevant for those of John's own time, because it dealt with the ultimate demise of their oppressors. He was showing them "what must soon take place."
