His only comments about hiring a nonwhite coach were in response to a story about the lack of nonwhite candidates, and his point was well short of “Mizzou should hire a black head coach.”
That article, by the way, offered five names: Mike Locksley (bad every year as a head coach), Kevin Sumlin (prohibitively expensive and far from great), Tee Martin (never been a head coach, fired as OC at USC), Scottie Montgomery (9-26 record at East Carolina), and Mel Tucker (5-7 in one year at Colorado).
That list is absolutely horrible. If a white guy with a comparable resume to any of those guys except Sumlin was mentioned, this board would throw a fit, and the response for Sumlin wouldn’t be much better.
The reality, unfortunately, is that right now, as Mizzou is searching for a head coach, there simply aren’t any black candidates with a resume that stands up. It’s a massive problem, but it’s not one a P5 school can fix. Odom for his part was an active part of the solution: hire and promote black assistants, which he did more than anyone else in the SEC. More schools need to make that a priority, and more smaller schools need to give those guys a chance to be head coaches.
