On the team charter Saturday night, maybe an hour removed from Tennessee’s 75-62 win over Washington, Rick Barnes gave his new assistant coach, Kim English, a new title.
Barnes introduced him in front of the plane as “Dr. English.”
After all, it was English who scouted Washington’s zone defense, the one that head coach Mike Hopkins brought with him from Syracuse. And it was that scout from English that helped the Vols stay in control from start to finish in the James Naismith Classic.
“We gameplanned big-time for it,” Bowden added. “Coach English had a good scout on them. He told us that if we got into the middle, the free-throw line, their big (Isaiah Stewart) wasn’t going to commit because they wouldn’t want to have him in foul (trouble). We took advantage of that.”
“We got the middle," Bowden said. "That is where our money was at.”
