Barnes is a good coach. He went to Texas and made them elite. Then he started to land the elite type of recruits that will go to Texas which was probably helped by the NC won by the football team and football's good run in that era as well. When Barnes started to have those more elite level athletes, his teams started to under perform. He is a good coach, but we now know there is something to him or his style that does not jive with the elite athletes with an attitude as well as it does with mid-level athletes who are willing to work.
He is starting to recruit more elite guys at Tennessee now, so we will see if this cycle repeats itself.
