The essence of capitalism is private ownership of property and free markets in which individuals make individual decisions on how to use that property, i.e. what to produce and consume.
Individual decision making in economic matters is compatible with individual decision making in political matters.
The essence of socialism is the central authority (government) owning the means of production and making the decisions on what to produce and how to distribute it. It is a very short journey from command decision making in economics to command decision making in politics.
The historical lesson is socialism leads to the loss of political feedom.
