I'm not from the South. I understand the United States is a republic, a voluntary union of sovereign nations.
The simplest aspect.
The brainwashing here is you thinking the entity "The United States" was some magical singular political entity when formed, when the civil war was fought, is now.
It's not. It used to be called "These United States" until Lincoln.
Fact: Lincoln prosecuted a war to prevent the Southern Nation States from leaving the union they had voted previously to be in and had subsequently voted to leave.
