last 20+ years of college ball with 3 guards and 2 forwards.
Been trying to explain this for a long time, but it's been quite a while since college basketball has been your traditional 1-2-3-4-5. With the scarcity of legitimate centers, a great many teams have been playing with 2 PF's or just 2 forwards of varying size/skill.
For a long time now, college basketball has been
1-2-2-4-4...if you want to use the numbers...or as I have usually labled it PG-Wing-Wing-Forward-Forward.
The 2 and the 3 became the same thing a long time ago in college ball. Nowadays, the 4 has become what the 3 used to be....which prompts you to often say the 3 and the 4 are the same thing. Not really true, but a statement based the overlapping of historical and modern concepts.
This season, Mizzou is going to play a 1-2-2-4-5 where the 4 is outside a lot/mostly like the 3 used to be back in the day. But this is because we have a real center. And if Okongo or Wilmore can walk and talk at the same time, we very well might continue that for a few more years.
