I think it should be the other way

I think we should have folks retire earlier, so that young people have opportunities (clear the decks). And then "retirees" can choose to work a job or not to supplement. It would encourage people to begin saving more earlier in anticipation of retirement (because they have to prepare for a longer period). Of course, it would be a sea change, so not without pain to some demographic group.
