that was always Pelosi's fear with impeachment, wasn't it? That it would backfire?

The problem is that the Dems lack a viable candidate. Otherwise, I'm not sure there's enough support for Trump (what he does have is very vocal). The Dems also don't appear to have a good incoming class of newbies. They're all "out there" on the fringe.
