Historically....
Point Guard - handled the ball, might be a spot up shooter, might be a drive and dish guy, but his #1 job was to get the ball up court and initiate the offense. Ideal example = Stockton, Isaiah Thomas
Shooting Guard - slightly taller. Good Shooter. Adequate ball handler, but maybe not the guy you want one on one against pressure handling the ball. Very good if he is not just a spot up shooter and can generate his own buckets. Example = Jordan
Small Forward - Inside out guy. The term "swing man" used to be used a lot. Not a post player, but has post skills against appropriately sized opponents. Not often a 3 pt shooter, but a good midrange guy. Can drive and score. Handles the ball well enough to help against pressure. But this guy was often closer to a big than he was a guard. Example = Dr. J
Power Forward - Inside player. Can work the block and the high post. Good ones had a reasonable midrange shot. Hopefully a good passer. Example = Malone, Duncan although he pushed modern limits.
Center - Post player. Good ones could play high and low and nobody cared all that much if they could hit a 10 footer, much less a 15 footer. Extreme talents like Kareem could run and do lots of stuff. Although Shaq won more on size than skill, he was a pretty traditional center.
Modern terms......
Point guard - handled the ball, might be a spot up shooter, might be a drive and dish guy, but his #1 job was to get the ball up court and initiate the offense.

Small Forward - In college, this is now (probably 20 years now) the same thing as the shooting guard. In the NBA it's pretty close as well. Obviously extreme cases like Lebron bend boundaries.
Power Forward - Inside out player. The midrange has extended to the 3 pt line. True post up ability is dying, but these guys can still score inside. Good ones still have some high post skill. Some have said the 3 and the 4 are the same thing. Not quite. The 3 is now the same as the 2 and the 4 is now pretty close to what the 3 USED to be.
Center - Still a post up guy, but the range is steadily increasing.
All of this is clearly about offense. Defensively, guys need to be able to defend their peer and hopefully a guy on either side of them as well.
