a myth.

It can be a factor, but it is not the sole method for assigning ratings.

It is a big myth on Tigerbored that Sheldon Richardson was a 4* until Bama and USC started recruiting him and then he moved up to a 5*. That is completely false.

Where the "who is recruiting them" factor comes in is on a kid that the services have not seen/rated/heard of commits to a notable school. And that kid will go from unrated to a 3*. Then maybe over the course of the year, they look into him and then they might bump him up a little more. But, most players are rated well before the commitment process starts.
