some person "we need you to create a way to ad hoc calculate cumulative returns for any date range"

lqf2b8 "easy just take the log returns and sum them"

some person "no that is crazy. no way that works"

lqf2b8 "that's what you are trained to do in school"

some person "nope that can't be right so just come up with an algorithm to do it"

lqf2b8 "you are going to need to pick specific date ranges because I'll have to calculate the cumulative returns in advance"

some person "that doesn't sound right but whatever I'll make it easy on you and give 20 date ranges"

lqf2b8 [precalulates cumulative returns and gives them to some person]

some person [checks cumulative returns to vendors cumulative returns and notices they don't match so some person calls vendor to see why]

vendor "we use log returns"

some person "lqf2b8, we should use log returns instead"
