implemented salary/payroll caps to prevent the richest clubs from buying all of the best players and having too much of a competitive advantage.
College sports is different but similar in some ways. Several schools already have a major competitive advantage, which makes it even more important to cap player earnings substantially (e.g. $10K/year) or pool all the earnings (including royalties and endorsements) and distribute them evenly to all the players.
There's also the tradition of amateurism in college sports, in addition to the "clubs" being non-profit universities rather than for-profit pro teams.
So again, look at the data that led the pro leagues to implement caps, and keep in mind that college sports are even more "vulnerable" to competitive imbalance.
