Rules change over time, from hand checking, to what constitutes palming, to illegal defense. For example, I don't like Lebron, and I loved MJ. I have to admit that under the rules of MJ's day, Lebron would have been more unstoppable. And, if you swapped Kobe and MJ, I think their stats largely get swapped. The illegal defense change had a greater effect than hand checking, but it doesn't fit the argument for the "get off my lawn" faction. MJ didn't have to beat his man, then face three other defenders with a foot in the lane waiting. Again, MJ was my favorite player for years, but the rules and a favorable whistle really helped him.
Trying to rank definitively players and teams across eras is just a way to waste time. So I'd better get back to work.
