visa applicants need a sponsor. Why? Financial. Such that if something were to happen to them (healthwise primarily), they would not become a burden to the US govt.

Basically, you're agreement to help them with financial obligations if the need arises. I think the time/term is for the duration of their visa status and time in the US. You can go online and read the affidavit that must be signed/notarized by you.
