individuals were anything but fine upstanding citizens. They just happen to be the wrong skin color and gender for the leaders of the current pogrom.

People live by the mores of their time. It is impossible for someone living in the 1700's to live by modern day mores which means it is ridiculous to try to judge historical figures by our current beliefs and practices.
