The Mayans in present day Mexico were infamous for systematically murdering tens of thousands in human sacrifice rituals that went on for days at a time. Other Central and South American tribes performed similar ritual murders, though on a lesser scale. There was nothing comparable in European history, save those slaughtered during several Muslim invasions and the institutional reign of murder during the Nazi and Soviet regimes.
