Trump is different from most Presidents in that he had vast business interests. You can see how he might want to curry favor with Putin if it still has hopes for a Trump Tower Moscow post-Presidency.
That doesn't make it illegal at all, just like ex-POTUSes capitalizing on their names for speaking events. It all depends on how he goes about it.
