The truth is what you wrote in the top 5 paragraphs. Missouri's governor nor it's legislature had the ability to leave the union. That would have required a plebiscite which never happened and Missourians would have voted overwhelmingly to stay had it happened. Just as they voted with their military service to stay in the union at a rate of 2-3 to 1.
The other big myth is that there was a north-south oriented border war with Kansas. There were self interested parties that took advantage of a civil war to rape and plunder on both sides of the border. Quantrill was an opportunistic POS that met his end in Ohio in 1865. Good riddance.
