Joshua does is put forth power and importance of God. It is not historic but a metaphor. I find this Yahveh God to be rife with insecurity and pettiness. It is an interesting literary character. The Bible is literature - so one can learn a lot by examining what the authors were going for at that point. It works also as an effort by the Hebrews to separate themselves from the people from whom they emerged - the Canaanites. This is seen in the Yahveh cult which was prevalent but not that pervasive among the Israelites at that time. This covers a period b/t 1200 and 1000 BCE.
