It has no more value, credibility or moral suasion than a lie. They will use truth or a lie with equal passion and conviction, depending on which is the more expeditious. And the level of knowledge and sophistication of their audience.

Since their audience is generally their own constituents, a lie works easier, quicker, and is more persuasive than the truth.
