But he didn't chase money. Exercised his craft and was well-compensated. When he learned Etta James had never made a dime on such tour staples for the Dead, the Allmans, et al, he directed GDP to cut a check to Etta for some $300,000 just cause it seemed right. They - the Dead primarily did fine as artists but poured the excess of the funds into the organization (see Wall of Sound, Meyer Speakers) and their own Rex Foundation. Never chased the buck. I admired that. But then they sold 600,000 tickets in a matter of hours for that Fare Thee Well thing few years back. I ordered tix the second day. No luck.
