Anyone who has had a political discussion with a California liberal democrat in the past several years has heard "California pays more to the Federal Government than it pays to California".

Perhaps as many as half a dozen tax policy think tanks across the political spectrum in Washington have researched it. If you Google the statement today you'll find lots of links to various sources.

A couple of things become apparent if you look into the statement. First, determining how much federal money flows into California is somewhat difficult. In addition to the various programs, i.e. Social Security, Medicare, grants, etc., there's the funds spent on various federal facilities, i.e. the military bases, etc. Secondly, it appears that California does contribute slightly more than it receives back.

One can argue that this is only right and perhaps it is California that's getting the good deal.

The California economy is a classic export economy. It's leading industries sell goods and services throughout the country (and much of the world). I.e. Technology in Silicon Valley, Entertainment in Hollywood, wine in Nappa and Sonoma, produce growers in the Central Valley, tourism virtually everywhere, etc. are examples that come to mind. What proportion of these industries' income comes from inside California or strictly California sources and what portion comes from elsewhere?

And California's location means that imports destined for the rest of the country and exports from the rest of the country to the Asian Pacific rim pass through San Diego, Long Beach and Oakland with the ports, etc. extracting dollars from the importers and exporters.

So, if you look a little bit below the surface, you find that California's prosperity is built in no small part on income extracted by its "exports" from the rest of the country and world.

Just for comparison sake, consider how many "exports" Missouri has to the rest of the nation, i.e. corn, soybeans and what else?

Additionally, because of its locatoin
