Yes Twitter is a great forum to speak directly to the people. But Twitter responses are not a reflection of the general attitudes. Social media has a tendency to mobilize the extremes but seldom speaks for the majority.
AOC is a perfect example. Like Trump she has harnessed the power of social media she knows how to effectively tweet and get her message out through other platforms. The media mistakes this for popularity. The Dems just released a poll that showed her favorability right around 20%. She is controlling the narrative but the masses do not like her or that narrative.
