high society of east and west coasts and in many European countries it is VERY common.
when I worked overseas I worked with a ton of Europeans and at first, it was very awkward b/c they ALWAYS did the two cheek air kiss, called a faire la bise, and I was never sure which cheek to "kiss" first.
