Neither the press nor the GOP weaklings made an issue of it.
So now, if someone wants to know who is in the country, they are racist. It is now racist to reveal racism by the socialists. Socialists want more browns in the country to be counted as citizens so they can get more representatives in congress.
To expose that is racist.
Thanx to the feckless GOP establishment over the years, when someone finally stands up to socialist craziness, they are the exception and are shunned by the GOP and of course the media.
