I think in terms of the literature, it is bigger than that. The money changers are wholly ingrained in Temple customs. People coming from all over needed common currency for purchase of the sacrificial lambs for the ceremonies. And if the followers of the Way that Jesus taught needed to evolved into Christians, then the role of Jesus is to replace that Lamb of old Hebrew - Temple-based culture.
Cool thing is that of the figures prominent in the presentation, Paul and Jesus both lived when the Temple was CENTRAL to Jewish life. Jesus was Jewish also to the core. But by turning over Temple tradition, the writers are able to place Jesus in a role of leaving the Jews behind.
