proteins vary in terms of their amino acid composition, making some "higher quality" than others. Plant-based protein sources are often incomplete — missing important "essential" amino acids, and typically contain fewer BCAAs (branched-chain amino acids) than their animal-based equivalents. Therefore, animal-based proteins provide a greater biological value due to the presence of all essential amino acids (e.g. lysine, methionine, isoleucine, threonine, tryptophan, etc.)
This is why vegans, on average, consume significantly less "high quality" protein than their omnivorous and vegetarian counterparts.
